Founded in 2010, the South East Asian Institute of Global Studies (SEAIGS) developed as an outgrowth of the Thai and Southeast Asian Studies Program (est. 1987) and the internationalization initiatives of the Office of Global Awareness at Payap University in Chiang Mai, Thailand. SEAIGS serves as a multi‐disciplinary research institute offering robust study abroad programs focusing on three main areas: human rights and politics, economic development and business, and cultures and societies in Southeast Asia, with a particular focus on the five countries of mainland Southeast Asia (Cambodia, Lao, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam). Beyond its study and research programs, other important units of SEAIGS also include International Campus Life which coordinates activities and student development programs to bridge the Thai and international students at Payap and the Payap Study Abroad Program which offers outbound exchange study opportunities for Payap students.

SEAIGS faculty members and staff are committed to furthering both global and regional awareness of issues affecting the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) among students at Payap University. Through the programs of its various units, SEAIGS aims to equip students with the tools, both inside and outside of the classroom, to understand the processes of globalization and their consequences in Southeast Asia.
